Collective Worship
At William Gilbert Endowed C of E Primary School, Collective Worship is the heartbeat of our school community. Rooted in our Christian vision “Through faith, hope and love, we learn together” worship provides a daily opportunity for pupils and staff to pause, reflect, and grow spiritually.
Our worship is shaped by the Anglican foundation of our school, drawing deeply on scripture, liturgy, and the rhythm of the Christian calendar. Each act of worship begins with a Bible verse that anchors the theme, ensuring the Word of God is central to our reflections. Through stories, prayer, music, silence, and symbols, pupils are invited to explore the character of God, the teachings of Jesus, and the big questions of life. Worship is inclusive and invitational, offering multiple ways to engage – whether through singing, stillness, or personal response.
We celebrate key Christian festivals often gathering at St Alkmund’s Church or within school. Our partnership with the church is vital: clergy and children’s workers lead weekly worship, contribute to pastoral support, and help bring scripture alive through drama and storytelling.
Each session follows a consistent and predictable structure. Worship is designed to be creative and memorable, incorporating music, storytelling, drama, poetry, and moments of stillness to support spiritual development.
Inclusivity is central to our worship life. Pupils from all backgrounds are welcomed and encouraged to participate in ways that feel meaningful to them. Children lead prayers – both rehearsed and spontaneous – and contribute to planning and evaluating worship. KS2 pupils lead their own class worships, fostering ownership and leadership. Our participation in the Music in Schools programme and Music Mark status reflects our belief in music as a powerful tool for spiritual expression.
Spirituality at William Gilbert is understood as a deep, personal connection to something greater than ourselves. It is nurtured through awe, wonder, questioning, and reflection – not confined to religious belief but open to all. Worship provides space for pupils and staff to explore who they are, what they value, and how they relate to the world.
At William Gilbert School, Collective Worship is more than a daily routine – it is a transformative experience. It inspires pupils and adults alike to live out our Christian values, reflect deeply, and flourish in faith, hope, and love.
